Good Girls are Bad News - Subhadra Sen Gupta

This is a story about a good girl who breaks the rules. The main character, Bineeta, was a girl who was good at academic and always acted properly. At the beginning of the story, or the 4th paragraph to be precise, Bineeta smoked a cigarette in a public place in order to win a bet, and people were shocked by her action.

People could hardly believe the one they saw smoking was their good girl Bineeta. A good girl like Bineeta smoking was very shocking news to them. When Bineeta's parents found out Bineeta smoked a cigarette, Bineeta was grounded.

While Bineeta was grounded, she started to believe that being a good girl didn't give her an enjoyable life. She decided to do things in her own way, and she convinced herself being a good girl was only for the convenience of the others.. Bineeta had her second cigarette for another bet, and that symbolized the beginning of her revolution.

Bineeta's parents were shocked by Bineeta’s rebellions, but they basically let Bineeta do what she wanted as long as her grades didn't drop. At the end of the story, Bineeta was 54 and a college principal. Bineeta had a wonderful career and still acting according to her beliefs.

This is a story that illustrates a traditional Asian family that cares mostly about the daughter's academic success. The story reflects the culture in which everyone is concerned about the kid who is ranked highest in school.

Girls like Bineeta is the only type of girl that I will consider marrying. I easily fall in love with girls smarter than I am. A girl who was the first in Mathematics at graduation is really someone to catch.

Everyone likes to break the rules, but we don't break the rules because breaking the rules comes with consequences. It is the consequences that we are not willing to confront. People like Bineeta has not faced too many troubles in her whole life, therefore, she is not afraid to get into one. When our confidence grows with our achievements up to certain level, the confidence will convince us that we can handle whatever consequences coming after breaking the rules. In other words, unlike Martin Luther King Jr., Bineeta didn't break the rules for any noble reasons. Bineeta simply broke the rules because she enjoyed it.
